Salve!

Not part of Project 27, but still something to work on – I’m enjoying exploring poetry! Hopefully you like it too!

Train

By Daniel Ottalini

Rusted industrial debris
Stretching as far as the eye can see
Steel, wool, lithographs, faded brick
fading
fast

Rowhouses and end houses
roofs leaking, caving in houses
Freeways and byways and overpasses
provide a menagerie of urban decline
Who lives here? Who still resides? Who fights away the darker side
of cities and towns
left behind?

Large expanses of empty land
Empty of the future once held
in a Steel-Factory hand
Rising swiftly from the ashes comes new investment
but not for the masses
Decaying schools and struggling stores
betray the cause of the ones still at home
Churches lay empty, community centers too
Liquor stores abundant, multiply, zombie-like
Graffiti and crumbling walls recede,
into the background at breakneck speed
Do these passengers know?
Do they see? Or…
is
it
just
noise?

We barrel on,
rocking
rolling
cars a-shakin’
Safely ensconced here inside
I sit and wonder
about the lives of those who still remain
outside.
