Project 27 – Dark Horse

A new poem for National Novel Writing Month – Dark Horse (No Katie Perry Jokes, please!)

Good morning!

I’ve discovered that notes on my iPhone can be almost as useful for writing poetry as for writing to-do lists. Who knew? Anywho, spun this one up late last night (yes, I’m a night owl, AND I have to wake up early. Hence, my love of coffee :-). It’s entitled Dark Horse, and no, it’s not an ode to Katie Perry. Although if she’s reading then yes, it absolutely is an ode to her, and she should subscribe, just like you!

Dark Horse

By Daniel Ottalini

I am here
I am ready
Prepared for learning
prepared and awaiting
what you have to say and do
every word and every world
opens up
through you

I know I am silent and reserved
Hard to notice
Hard to serve
But if you
Believe
And push
And refuse to let me
Slip
Slide
Away into the ever present
Noise
Of a busy
Classroom

I will show you what I know
Don’t let my skin
My accent
My gender
Tell you no
Let my knowledge sing
Let it blaze a trail through this building
Let my classmates cheer in awe
And realize they too
Can be our school’s
Dark Horse.

Hope you enjoyed it! I had a lot of fun writing this one. Let me know what you think in the comments!
