What makes a gladiator? Brawn? Showmanship? Skill? Heart?

For Lucia Rhodanus Fortem, the arena is a ticket to fame, fortune, and belonging.

But the long familiar arena is changing, and gladiators are, quite literally, a dying breed. Their replacements – Mechagladiators – piloted constructs made of the best Roman technology, stand ready to take their place on the hard packed dirt of the Coliseum.

What humans can stand against the tide of progress? Who dares face down a mechanical beast? How can the power of human connection forge a bond stronger than steel?

The last gladiator in Rome faces the toughest challenge of all in this prequel novella for the Steam Empire Chronicles, Daniel Ottalini’s Roman Alternate History World.

Readers who enjoy

  • Gladiator Combat
  • Class struggle
  • Roman History
  • Alternate History
  • Love in a time of conflict

will thoroughly enjoy this novella!

Readers of the Steam Empire Chronicles will discover connections to old characters, meet new characters, and uncover revelations that may shake the entire Roman Empire to its core.

Not sure where to start? Check here! For only two more weeks, my first novel – Brass Legionnaire – is still free on Smashwords! Download it for free, then place your pre-order for The Last Gladiator!

Best of Editing – March, 2020

It has been a busy couple of days working on revising and editing The Last Gladiator! Here’s a few of the better edits (or perhaps, needed edits/revisions). The big take aways for me, as usual are…

  1. Passive Voice Vs Active Voice
  2. Show don’t tell
  3. Massive (one of my beta readers noticed this, I did a find/replace search, and ended up with 22 uses of the word in just 39,000 words. Eek!

Read on to find some more not so elegant pieces of writing of mine.

School is coming, so What’s Next?

School is coming back for us teachers here in Maryland! My county’s continuity of learning plan is being activated, which means less time to do awesome blog posts and writing, but just in time for me to send the Last Gladiator off to the format people!

So what’s next?

Simple,

  1. Prepare and finish the outline for a Brief History of Rome and New Caesaria. This is my next project.
  2. Make a list for people interested in doing a book tour for The Last Gladiator – I’d love to connect with more authors and am more than willing to do a blog trade or guest post!
  3. Plan for the forthcoming Anthology of my novellas coming sometime next winter or spring – depending on time of course!

That’s it so far! If you’re interested in joining a book tour, let me know! And remember to subscribe and follow me here, and on Facebook and twitter!

Ciao!

Story Map of the Steam Empire Chronicles

Here’s a simple story map of the Entire Steam Empire Chronicles!

Hi all,

I realized that I’ve been missing a useful tool for all the newcomers to the Steam Empire Chronicles! It’s a story map!

Obviously, when I update it with the still in progress novella, it will fit beautifully into this. Where does the Last Gladiator fit? It’s a prequel that I think is best read AFTER you read all the other novels and novellas!
