Project 27 – Dark Horse

A new poem for National Novel Writing Month – Dark Horse (No Katie Perry Jokes, please!)

Good morning!

I’ve discovered that notes on my iPhone can be almost as useful for writing poetry as for writing to-do lists. Who knew? Anywho, spun this one up late last night (yes, I’m a night owl, AND I have to wake up early. Hence, my love of coffee :-). It’s entitled Dark Horse, and no, it’s not an ode to Katie Perry. Although if she’s reading then yes, it absolutely is an ode to her, and she should subscribe, just like you!

Project 27 Continues – Also, an update on NaNoWriMo2017 this year!

Salve!

Today I have another poetry attempt for you. C&C always appreciated.

In other news, I’ll be back on the writing bandwagon for NaNoWriMo2017 this fall. After all, Laurel Emperor won’t write itself! We’ll just have to get it in around all this poetry.

Middle – Project 27

Another attempt at poetry after you all enjoyed my last one.

Hi all,
Everyone really seemed to like my last effort at poetry, so I figured, why not try again?
Goal: 27 pieces of poetry
Theme/Topic: Teaching/School
Why? For kicks! Who knows, I may publish a book out of it (He says, jokingly)
Anyways, here’s today’s attempt – C&C always appreciated, especially as I’m new to this part of writing. I find the experience very free flowing, it’s best when I don’t stop for any reason.

Middle

Forever Stuck
In the middle
Always playing
Second fiddle

Smart and sassy
Young and quick
Quick to give those boys a trip
To the nurse’s office they go
When she breaks their ankles on the field
Or the playground
She goes fast
They go slow

Brothers and sisters
Older than she
Have already been through the halls
She graces now.
But new halls they are,
New friends, new places, new problems
World wise at the age of two times five
Desperate, thirsty for knowledge, she…
Strives.

Stuck in the middle
Playing second fiddle
But will her teacher see
A member of the background chorus she will not be
But rather
A soloist

“On the Question of Race” Poetry Writing

A foray into poetry and an update on what I’ve been up to!

Salve!

School is back in full swing, along with my own lovely ‘adult school’ (Read: Grad School), so time for writing and blogging has been shrunk, but not gone. I’m still planning on doing NaNoWriMo2017, and I’m looking forward to it. We’ll see how it goes!

Today I have something different for you. In my most recent graduate class, a course on the Foundations of Social Justice Teaching, we had an incredibly interesting opportunity to hear poetry by Michelle Banks – an actress, poet, and native Washingtonian. The poem was entitled “On the Question of Race“, and after hearing, we were asked to write our own. The only ‘requirement’ is that you open with the same stanza and close with the same stanza (substituting white for your own selection).
