I am extremely excited to announce that Copper Centurion will be released on May 1, 2013. This full-length novel has roughly 80,000 and will be on sale for $3.99 on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, the iStore, Kobo, and all other platforms through Smashwords. There will also be a print version available on the same day.

I am currently looking for the following…

  1. 7-10 people willing to read ARC copies of the novel.
  2. 10-15 people willing to host me for a blog tour in May.
  3. 2-3 people to be on my ‘street team’ – requesting the book at your local library, leaving the promotional posters at the local independent book store/library if possible, generally promoting it on twitter, goodreads, etc.

What my Characters do on their Birthdays

Hi all, Modern Papyrus here, interviewing all your favorite book characters to see what they are up to on their birthday, since they all seem to (strangely enough) have the same birthday!

Julius Brutus Caesar – You know, ever since I’ve joined the legions, I’ve sort of forgotten when it is my birthday because I lost track of time. Oh it is today? I suppose I’ll be doing some guard duty, then perhaps going out to the local tavern. My favorite drink? A good old mug of local beer. Unless it’s that North African stuff. No beer from there please. (Lowers voice conspiratorially) Actually, the centurion over in 6th cohort brews up some ridiculously strong ale. I swear, last time I had a pint I (Censored by order of FCC) and then we all (censored) but then the Tribune showed up and we had to (censored). Now that is a beer any god would be proud of!

Senatora Octavia Pelia – My birthday? Why yes it is thank you. Did you get me anything? An interview? That’s not very considerate of you. Don’t you know I hate interviews?
MP: But you’re a senator, you should love interviews.
OP: And? I greatly dislike them. Waste of time. Anyways, I’ll most likely be enjoying the comforts of home, having a few of my friends over and engaging in a wonderous evening of political talk and chat. Definitely excited to have a few very important guests coming over.
MP: Such as?
OP: Oh you know, head of the Foreign Relations Committee, the Head of the Palace Guard, Legion Commander Appius. It will be a ball!
MP: Any comment on the word that you and the commander are courting.
OP: (Icy Stare)
MP: Nevermind! On to the next interview!

New Short Story in the works

A new novella is in the works!


Hi all,

Just wanted to share some exciting information with you! In case you had missed it, I mentioned on my Facebook page that I was busy writing up a new idea for a novella set in the Steam Empire Chronicles world.

In fact, I’ve already started writing it.

“But didn’t you just finish a novel? Aren’t you going to take a break?”

Well yes, but I was honestly bored right now before the holidays, having just managed to finish up my last graduate work. Now that I am officially MORE educated than before, and making a nice, paltry sum of money more from the day job, I no longer need to worry about writing multiple papers on a weekly basis. Thus more free time.

Anywho, to get to the point. The new story will be called…

Indeed, tremble in excitement oh vast ranks of readers! It shall be exciting, and will feature one of my personal favorite characters (along with many a reader, which makes me laugh), Captain Rufus Tiverii Alexandros, master and commander of the great ship H.M.A.S. Scioparto. But Roma Aeronautica will take place far before his forays into air legions and the events of the Brittenburg Rebellion and Nortland Expedition.

And I’ve already spilled too much! Be on the look out for more information, coming soon. Theoretically, I could get this novella (really more a glorified short story, I’m aiming for 15k words or less) done by February.

Time to get to work I suppose!

Brass Legionnaire has a great premise as being the only novel that mixes steampunk with the Romans and, though I never would have thought of that myself, it really works well in this alternate universe that Daniel Ottalini created in this novel. You get the feel of the traditional Romans, and yet there’s a more modern and really awesome steampunk twist to it. All the gadgets and machines were neat and fit in well with the Romans, making it seem that this story could have actually happened in some alternate reality.”

Hi all,

I apologize for being gone for so long, that’s what happens when you’ve got grad school, a full time teaching career, and a new house all to content with writing your paper! The good news – I’m about 7/10 of the way done with Copper Centurion now. More good news, I have the editor lined up and should hear back from the cover artist and book formatters this week. The bad news, I’ve got to finish it super fast! I’m now racing my beta readers to see who can finish first, them or me! But I have a treat for you! Here is the edited, finished, first chapter of Copper Centurion. I honestly love it, it sounds great and really sets the stage for the rest of the book. So I hope you enjoy it!
